A Note on Relative Hyperbolicity and Artin Groups

In [12], I. Kapovich and P. Schupp showed that certain 2-dimensional Artin groups (those with all relator indices at least 7) are hyperbolic relative (in the sense of Farb) to their non-free rank 2 parabolic subgroups. This paper considers the question of relative hyperbolicity of an Artin group with regard to the geometry of the associated Deligne complex. We prove a relative version of the Mi...

Graphs of groups and the Atiyah conjecture for one-relator groups

For a finitely-presented, torsion-free, discrete group G, the Atiyah conjecture asserts that the L-Betti numbers of any finite CW-complex with fundamental group G are integers; this conjecture has a natural extension to all groups. We prove that the class of groups for which the (extended) Atiyah conjecture holds and the finite subgroups have only finitely many different orders, is closed under...

Artin groups of euclidean type

Coxeter groups were introduced by Jacques Tits in the 1960s as a natural generalization of the groups generated by reflections which act geometrically (which means properly discontinuously cocompactly by isometries) on spheres and euclidean spaces. And ever since their introduction their basic structure has been reasonably well understood [BB05, Bou02, Dav08]. More precisely, every Coxeter grou...

The Tits Alternative for Non-spherical Pride Groups

Pride groups, or “groups given by presentations in which each defining relator involves at most two types of generators”, include Coxeter groups, Artin groups, triangles of groups, and Vinberg’s groups defined by periodic paired relations. We show that every non-spherical Pride group that is not a triangle of groups satisfies the Tits alternative.

The Structure of Euclidean Artin Groups

The Coxeter groups that act geometrically on euclidean space have long been classified and presentations for the irreducible ones are encoded in the well-known extended Dynkin diagrams. The corresponding Artin groups are called euclidean Artin groups and, despite what one might naively expect, most of them have remained fundamentally mysterious for more than forty years. Recently, my coauthors ...
